England v Italy: 'We're the better team,' says Steven Gerrard

Despite talk about the quality of the Italian team, England captain Steven Gerrard thinks he will be leading the better team.

The heat and humidity will be a factor when the Amazonian jungle city of Manaus hosts its first World Cup match tonight.
England coach Roy Hodgson said his players were ready for the extreme conditions in which they will play their opener against Italy.
"There's 32 teams and I just wonder if 32 will give you the same answer: we're here to try and win it, we're here to try and play our best," Hodgson said on the eve of the match and before the final training session on the Arena Amazonia pitch.
"I think we're well prepared, I don't think we are concerned about the heat and humidity because we've been training in heat and humidity" Hodgson said.
"We're looking very fit as a result of it. So as far as I'm concerned the only matters to deal with tomorrow night are the quality of the Italian team".

Although there may have been much talk about the quality of the Italian team the England captain Steven Gerrard thinks he will be leading the better team.
"I think we're a better team, I think we're a better squad, I think confidence is higher, preparation's gone really well, not just over the last three-four weeks but in all the qualifications game, we've been moving forward in the right direction and grown as a team, trying to improve. But now we know we're going to get judged on the games coming up, and hopefully we can go out and prove to everyone that we have moved forward a lot and improved a lot as a team."
